Garage Remotes and Receivers

Remotes, and Why They Stop Working Properly

Three quite different problems present as “the remote does not work”, and they have three different fixes.

It Works, But Only Up Close

This is the most common and the most misdiagnosed. People replace the battery, see no change, and buy a new remote, which also does not help.

The usual cause is the receiver aerial. On most openers that is a thin wire hanging down from the motor housing, and it needs to hang freely to work. It gets tucked up into the housing during a tidy-up, wrapped around the casing, or its connection corrodes.

Near the water in Long Beach corrosion at that connection is common enough that we check it first.

One Remote Died, The Others Are Fine

That is a battery or the remote itself. Batteries first, because they cost almost nothing.

If a new battery does not fix it, the remote can usually be replaced with either a manufacturer unit or a universal one paired to your opener.

Nothing Works, But the Wall Button Does

The wall button is hard-wired, so if it works the motor and the logic are alive. That points at the receiver.

Sometimes a receiver board can be replaced on its own. Sometimes an external receiver is added, which is also the moment to move from fixed code to rolling code.

Fixed Code and Rolling Code

Openers made before the late 1990s send the same radio code every time. That signal can be captured and replayed at your door later.

Rolling code generates a new code on every press, so a recorded one is already spent. If we are replacing a receiver anyway, moving to rolling code usually costs little extra and closes a real gap.

Clearing the Memory

Whatever else we do, we will ask whether you want the memory cleared. An opener holds every device ever paired to it, and after a house move or a tenant there is no way to know what is still out there.

It takes a couple of minutes and it is the most valuable thing on this page.
